MASTER OF ARTS (TESOL) (PROFESSIONAL) (CRICOS 117331J)

The MASTER OF ARTS (TESOL) (PROFESSIONAL) course provides graduates with a professional qualification for teaching English to speakers of other languages. The course has 16 subjects, comprising 9 core subjects and 7 electives, studied over 4 trimesters. The course includes a supervised practicum.

King’s Own Institute works closely with other language teaching providers in Sydney to organise practicum placements, access current industry trends, resources and expertise in teaching methodology, and to identify resources and trends in the field.

Master of Arts (TESOL) (Professional) is built on the Master of Arts (TESOL) program. This course provides students with an opportunity to focus on a wider range of discipline specific knowledge by taking more elective subjects in the discipline area. This allows them to develop a broader understanding of key issues and recent developments in multiple areas related to professional practice such as phonology, technology, intercultural communication, and learner psychology.

This course, by exposing students to contemporary trends, methods, research and pedagogy in the field, serves as a pivotal step in nurturing pedagogical leaders who are adept at deploying their skills and confidence in diverse TESOL settings, including classrooms and other professional practice contexts.

Course Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate additional mastery of theories of second language acquisition and contemporary approaches to language teaching relevant to TESOL
  2. Apply research principles and processes and engage in continuing independent learning to develop enhanced professional skills and knowledge in TESOL
  3. Critically review, synthesise, apply and evaluate contemporary theories of second language acquisition and apply professional skills and knowledge to curriculum development and lesson planning
  4. Communicate complex knowledge to a broad range of audiences from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  5. Demonstrate skills and confidence in a broad range of classroom teaching scenarios
  6. Show initiative through leadership and innovation in a learning organisation by interpreting and communicating additional pedagogical knowledge
  7. Show an informed appreciation of the ethical standards and requirements for continuing professional development in TESOL settings
  8. Plan and execute a substantial research-based project relevant to TESOL.

To be permitted to enrol in this course, students must have completed a Bachelor degree (AQF Level 7) or higher.
