This subject analyses tests for language assessment, such as IELTS and TOEFL, and their validity in a range of contexts, to interpret test scores, and to discuss curriculum approaches which use assessment to assist students to learn. The social and ethical dimensions of language testing receive prominent attention. Since the students are at the one time being assessed themselves and preparing to assess others, this unit is one in which they have to ‘look both ways’. They have to examine how they react to the different types of assessment and ask themselves how they would use them in their own classrooms. They have to learn to moderate their demands according to the background of the students and the level that is required.
